The “Shuffle-Bored” effect, routined so it can be done over Zoom, the phone, Skype, or in person.

What is the “Shuffle-Bored” effect?

Written by Simon Aronson in 1980, it’s a project that started with knowing the outcome of an apparently random mixing of the cards and how many ended up being face up. Throughout the years it has evolved through different magicians and here is where it ends up in my routine… The spectator shuffles cards face up into face down as much as they want. At the end, a piece of paper that has been out from the beginning is shown to have all the details (i.e. there will be 28 face down cards, 16 of those will be red cards, and all the black cards will be clubs.) Everything is correct except for the last detail, because amongst the clubs there is a 4 of spades. The magician opens up the folded paper one last time and it reads, “except the 4 of spades.”

This once had to be done with a deck that was prepared by the magician beforehand. Now the spectator does all the work themself with their own deck.
